What is counselling?

Counselling is often referred to as a talking treatment. It can help you overcome emotional difficulties and free you from unhelpful ways of feeling, thinking and behaving.

It might focus on:
• Current problems and decision making
• Issues or traumas from the past which still affect you
• Particular relationships in your life
• Feelings or inner conflict
• Raising confidence
• Improving self-esteem

Counselling offers you a safe and confidential service, the counsellor acts as a facilitator and will provide a non-judgmental relationship in which you will be
assisted to identify your own strengths and personal resources, look at
problem-solving strategies and develop insights, key skills and techniques to give you better control of your life.

Torfaen Mind's counselling service has developed and grown since its initial conception 16 years ago. It meets the needs of the communities of Torfaen providing a much needed talking therapy. Currently we have 12 volunteer counsellors, one staff counsellor and we offer up to 42 sessions of counselling a week.

We mainly use an integrative counselling/psychotherapy approach, inclusive of Humanistic, Person Centred and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. More experienced counsellors are training in the Human Givens Approach. The duration of counselling sessions is flexible and dependent on need, we are progressive in the use of therapies such as the Rewind Technique and Emotional Freedom Therapy for post traumatic stress, and phobias.

Funding is provided through the Local Health Board and client donations enabling the provision of an affordable and alternative service to the mix of private and statutory counselling in Torfaen.

In the last 6 years referrals have increased by over 200% with clients presenting a broad range of issues including depression, anxiety, stress, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, sexual and domestic abuse, anger, personality disorders and relationship problems.

Making a Referral

It is easy to make a referral to our service. The first step is to lift the phone and speak directly to us or leave a message on our 24hr answering service. Alternatively, e-mail The Counselling Service Manager. The second step is to attend for an assessment in which we can clarify what you would like to achieve from attending counselling sessions. This will help you become more focused and help you think constructively about how your life will be different once counselling is successful for you. You will then be on the waiting list for allocation to a
counsellor.

The third step is to take up the opportunity of 6 sessions of counselling and on completion, together with your personal counsellor, you will review your progress to establish if you require any further sessions together.

Client Testimonial

A 21 year old unemployed lady came to us with a lot of distressing childhood memories. She suffered from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and low self esteem and had a slight stammer; she had self-harmed and attempted suicide in the past. Her traumatic memories were explored and linked to her present
feelings to help rationalise her feelings of depression. She worked well with
mindfulness and relaxation techniques combined with the Rewind technique. At the end of counselling her panic attacks had ceased her low moods had lifted and her stammer had stopped. She commented,
“Counselling has made me a lot more confident in myself and has helped me open up about my problems. I would recommend counselling to everyone”.
