Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two day brief intervention workshop that will train you to help people at risk of suicide stay safe and seek further help. This training is essential for anyone that is likely to come into contact with people experiencing thoughts of suicide. Not only will it help save lives, it can help protect you from feeling overwhelmed and being unsure how to respond, keeping you safe from unnecessary stress and pressure.
ASIST is an evidence-based “suicide first aid intervention” designed to be used in the immediate moment of someone disclosing suicidal thoughts. It is important to stress that ASIST is not about training you to deliver therapy, but it does equip you with tools to help keep a suicidal person safe during the timeframe of the intervention.

People that have already benefited from this training include:
Teachers; Friends/family of those expressing suicide thoughts; Drug
Intervention workers; Alcohol Workers; Nursing staff; Occupational Therapists; Police; Coastguards; Youth Offending Team Workers; Midwives; Counsellors; Social Services and Housing Support Workers.

Mental Health First Aid (Wales)
Mental Health First Aid (Wales) is the help given to someone experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained.
MHFA does not teach people to be therapists. However, it does teach people how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to guide a person towards appropriate professional help.

The aims of Mental Health First Aid are:
• To preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others
• To provide help to prevent the mental health problems developing into a more   serious state
• To promote the recovery of good mental health
• To provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem
There is a stigma associated with mental health problems which may hinder people from seeking help. People are often ashamed to discuss mental health problems with family, friends and work colleagues. They may also be reluctant to seek help and support for such problems because of their concerns about what others will think of them.
Many people are not well informed. Understanding how to recognise mental health problems and what effective treatments are available is not widespread. With greater community awareness, people will be able to recognise their own and others‟ problems and feel more comfortable about seeking assistance.
