Torfaen Mind offers a variety of volunteering opportunities through it's Engagement Gateway project. The aims of this project is to reduce economic inactivity in Wales by improving the employability of people who face barriers to employment and are furthest from the labour market. The Engagement Gateway project is funded by the Welsh Government and European Structural Funds (European Social Fund). Volunteers have been engaged with Torfaen Mind as receptionists and kitchen assistants since the occupation of the Well Being Centre in October 2009 but this has developed since the commencement of the Gateway project supporting more volunteers to engage in different departments within the organisation. Simultaneously, other participants have been engaged in the project. Volunteers and other participants are supplied with various training courses both in-house and externally thereby increasing their employability. Where necessary referral to other agencies in respect of further voluntary and/or paid employment have been made.
“Before becoming a volunteer my life was aimless, no-where to go, just doing the same thing every day week in and week out with no places for returning to work”. Since March 2010, this volunteer has undertaken training courses of a diverse nature. He will complete an NVQ in Administration later this year using his volunteering role at Torfaen Mind as the basis of his qualification. This volunteer was enrolled into the Engagement Gateway project at its inception and in March 2011 was appointed as a Relief Worker at Torfaen Mind and also secured an appointment as a weekend Care Assistant with a Care Association. This volunteer says of his experience at Torfaen Mind: “A very rewarding experience at Mind. My confidence has grown and the training has built up my stature. It has given me a road to go down for the jobs I can apply for”.
